About me & my approach

My name is Dawn Preston, I am a professionally qualified counsellor and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I practice within the guidelines of the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I am also registered with the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).

I am an integrative counsellor, specialising in working with adults and older adults. I offer face to face private counselling to clients from my office in Chester-le-Street. I help people who find themselves in a difficult place share their situation and thoughts in a safe, caring and confidential environment.

I qualified as a counsellor in 2013 and since then I have worked in a range of settings, including a sexual and domestic violence organisation, an IAPT service working with GP client referrals, HM Prisons and a secondary school. Additionally, I have experience in working with people with special educational needs and disabilities, and within a mental health crisis team. I also continue to seek and engage with further professional development and ongoing relevant research and training.

My approach to counselling is integrative which means that I draw on other therapeutic approaches when appropriate and helpful for the client. However, person-centred counselling is at the heart of my therapy as this embodies the empathy, congruence and non-judgemental nature of the counselling that I offer to my clients.

I believe mid-life and onwards is a particularly relevant time for people to seek therapy, as this can be a period of significant change, some of which is not always welcome. These changes could arise from the death of a close friend or family member, the breakdown of a relationship, illness or trauma, all of which can result in feelings of disappointment, fear, pain or confusion. If any of these feelings resonate with you, then counselling may help you to move forward with the issues that are troubling you.

Counselling is not about telling people what to do; rather, it is a journey of self-enquiry and self-directed learning.  I provide a safe space for clients to share their thoughts and feelings, ensuring that the issues they would like to talk about are received without bias, prejudice or judgement but with compassion, warmth and thoughtfulness.

I build a strong working relationship with clients based on trust, regard and respect. This foundation supports the client towards finding an increased appreciation of self, the confidence and voice to seek a different way of living, and the freedom to approach and navigate the world their way.

I am a counsellor who helps people overcome a variety of issues and work towards improving life and finding more fulfilment...please feel free to contact me for a no-obligation chat if you feel that I may offer you the therapeutic environment that you are looking for.
